What is Kainchi Dham?
Nestled in the Himalayan foothills about 17 kilometres from Nainital, Kainchi Dham is one of the most spiritually powerful ashrams in North India. Established in 1964 by Param Pujya Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji — simply called "Maharajji" by devotees — it sits at the junction of two mountain streams in the Bhowali-Almora road, at an elevation of around 1,400 metres.
The name "Kainchi" literally means scissors in Hindi, referring to the twin mountain bends that form a scissor-like shape in the surrounding hills. From the moment you enter the ashram gates, you are greeted by the sound of flowing water from the Kosi River, the fragrance of incense, and a profound stillness that is difficult to describe but impossible to forget.
How to Reach Kainchi Dham
By Train
The nearest railway station is Kathgodam (about 40 km away), well-connected to Delhi, Lucknow, Agra, and Kolkata. From Kathgodam, taxis and shared jeeps run regularly to Bhowali and Nainital. From Bhowali, Kainchi Dham is just 8 kilometres on the Almora road.
By Road
From Delhi: Take NH9 towards Moradabad, then Rampur, Rudrapur, Haldwani, and Kathgodam — a distance of about 320 km, taking 6–7 hours depending on traffic. From Nainital, Kainchi Dham is about 17 km (30 minutes by car).
By Air
The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport (about 60 km). However, limited flights are available. Most pilgrims prefer the train-taxi combination via Kathgodam.
Darshan Timings at Kainchi Dham
The ashram is generally open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with a lunch break from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The most peaceful time to visit is early morning (6–9 AM) when the energy is serene and crowds are minimal.
Important: Darshan may be restricted or modified during peak festivals, national holidays, and the Guru Purnima celebrations in June–July. Always check recent updates before planning your trip.
Best Time to Visit
Kainchi Dham can be visited throughout the year, but the months of March through June and September through November offer the best weather — cool, clear skies, and manageable crowds. The monsoon months (July–August) bring heavy rain and frequent landslides on mountain roads, making travel difficult. Winters (December–February) are cold but beautiful, with occasional snowfall visible on surrounding peaks.
Accommodation Near Kainchi Dham
The ashram itself offers limited accommodation for serious devotees, typically on a first-come, first-served basis and only for those staying for more than a day. For most visitors, staying in Bhowali (8 km) or Nainital (17 km) is more practical. Several homestays around the ashram now cater specifically to pilgrims, offering satvik meals, comfortable rooms, and easy access to the temple.

Shoes must be removed before entering the main temple. Carry your own water bottle and light snacks for the journey, as facilities along the route are limited.
