Halting the Deadly Epidemic in the Remote Hills of Kumaon

In the 1950s, before modern roads and hospitals reached deep into the Kumaon region, a devastating waterborne epidemic (believed to be cholera) struck a cluster of remote mountain villages near Bhumiyadhar and Bhowali. With no medical clinics within miles, villagers were dying by the dozens daily, and panic swept the valleys. Desperate village elders walked through the night to reach the secluded kutiya where Neem Karoli Baba was staying. Weeping inconsolably, they fell at his feet: "Baba, save our children! Entire families are dying, and the funeral pyres never stop burning!" Maharaj Ji listened with immense compassion. He walked down to the village well accompanied by the headman. Baba stood beside the stone well, chanted sacred mantras, and cast holy tulsi leaves and gangajal into the water. Then he turned to the villagers and declared with divine authority: "Take this water! Drink it freely and administer it to every sick man, woman, and child. From this moment onward, not a single person who drinks this water will die of this sickness!" The villagers carried pails of the sanctified well water to every affected home. Patients on the verge of death who could not keep food down drank the water. Within hours, their fever broke, dehydration ceased, and vitality returned to their bodies. From that precise afternoon, the epidemic completely halted across the valley, and not a single subsequent fatality was recorded. The grateful hill villagers to this day celebrate Baba as their supreme protector and guardian angel.
