The Stopping of the British Steam Train at Neeb Karori

In the early 1900s, Maharaj Ji (then wandering as a youthful ascetic named Baba Lakshman Das) boarded a first-class compartment on a passenger train traveling through Uttar Pradesh. He was wrapped in a simple rough cloth and possessed nothing of worldly wealth. At the small rural junction of Neeb Karori (Nibkarori), an arrogant British ticket collector discovered Baba Ji without a ticket. Despite Baba Ji’s sweet, humble smile, the conductor angrily pulled the emergency chain and forcefully ejected Maharaj Ji from the carriage onto the platform. Maharaj Ji quietly smiled, drove his wooden staff (chimta) into the dirt beside the tracks, and sat peacefully cross-legged in the shade of a nearby banyan tree. The conductor blew his whistle, the signal fell green, and the driver opened the steam throttle. But the giant steam locomotive did not budge. The boiler roared, steam hissed furiously, and the iron drive-wheels strained, yet the train remained completely motionless. Assuming mechanical trouble, a second powerful relief engine was coupled to the rear, yet both locomotives combined stood frozen as if anchored to the earth by invisible chains. Hours passed. The passengers grew restless and dehydrated in the scorching midday sun. Finally, an Indian railway official who recognized Baba Ji whispered to the British superintendent: "Sir, you have made a grievous mistake. You have insulted a great living siddha. Unless you bow before him, beg his forgiveness, and invite him back into the train, this locomotive will never move from this spot." Humiliated and bewildered, the British officials walked over to the tree where Maharaj Ji was resting. Bowing respectfully, they pleaded: "Holy Baba, please forgive our insolence and come back aboard so the passengers may proceed." Maharaj Ji laughed with childlike joy and replied: "I will board on two conditions: First, you must construct a proper railway station here for the poor villagers of Neeb Karori so they do not have to walk twenty miles for a train. Second, you must promise never again to harass wandering sadhus." The British authorities immediately signed an agreement consenting to the terms. The moment Maharaj Ji stepped his foot onto the carriage floor, the locomotive hissed gently and surged forward effortlessly down the tracks. True to their word, the British government built the Neeb Karori Railway Station, and the village forever became tied to Baba Ji’s immortal name.
