Transforming River Water into Pure Desi Ghee at Kainchi
Eyewitness Account & Recorded Leela
“During a massive ashram bhandara when cooking ghee ran out, Baba commanded devotees to fill canisters with river water from Kshipra. The moment it entered the hot cauldrons, it turned into fragrant, pure ghee.”
During the early days of Kainchi Dham ashram in the 1960s, a major bhandara (sacred feast) was organized. Thousands of pilgrims arrived from the hills of Kumaon. Food was being cooked day and night in massive iron cauldrons.
Late in the night, the head cook rushed to Maharaj Ji in complete panic: "Baba Ji! The pure ghee is completely exhausted. Still hundreds of devotees are waiting in line to be fed, and we have no more ghee left to fry the puris!"
Maharaj Ji feigned mild anger and exclaimed: "Why do you disturb me with trivial matters? Take two empty canisters, go down to the river stream running below the ashram, fill them to the brim with river water, and pour it directly into the boiling hot cauldrons! But do not look inside until the cooking is complete!"
Devotees hurried to the river, filled the large kerosene-style tins with cold river water, and poured the clear stream water into the sizzling hot cauldrons. To their utter amazement, instead of splattering or bursting into steam, the water instantly transformed into rich, fragrant, golden desi ghee! The sweet aroma of fresh puris filled the night air, and every single devotee was fed abundantly.
The next morning, Maharaj Ji instructed the ashram manager: "Now go to the market in Haldwani, purchase two fresh tins of the best desi ghee, and return them back to the river. We must never take anything from Mother Ganga without paying our debt." The devotees quietly poured the replacement tins of ghee into the river, bowing in deep reverence to Maharaj Ji’s mastery over nature.
